Lois Cohen Slovin

Lois Cohen Slovin, 85 passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Lois was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on July 12, 1939 to Charlotte Socks Cohen and Simon Cohen. Lois moved to Miami Beach with her parents in the 1950s where she met Paul Slovin, a teacher. Lois graduated from Miami Dade Community College with an Associate of Arts degree. She held many secretarial positions and could type a zillion words a minute. Lois worked for many people, but her proudest position was with Dr. Margaret Fischl at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and was on the forefront of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. She reinvented herself many times throughout her life and navigated with positivity and perseverance. She moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 2006 to be closer to family and was an amazing grandmother to Hannah and Jules Berman- never once missing a performance or celebration.

Lois volunteered throughout her life teaching children to read in schools, visiting people in nursing facilities without family, playing cards with people who were home bound, and helping families who were houseless. Known as Nivols, she loved a good game of euchre and had an online community in which she played daily. She never let anything stop her! She beat the odds against cancer more than once and went through a major surgery to make it to NYC for her grandchild’s college graduation.

Lois moved the needle with with her care for others. Her immeasurable and unconditional love was shared with all of those around her. She tried new things, like abstract art, traveled the world, got involved with social justice and politics, made friends with everyone and anyone.

Leave it to Lois!

She is preceeded in death by her parents, Charlotte and Simon Cohen, brother, Martin F. Cohen, and husband, Paul Slovin. Lois leaves behind a loving legacy. Daughter, Karen Slovin Berman (David), stepson, Dennis Slovin (Amy), grandchildren, Hannah S. Berman (HC), Jules Berman (Kaylee), her cat, Abby, cousins, best friends and perfect strangers.
