Arista D. Salzstein, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away on December 17, 2024, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 85. Born on January 28, 1939, in New York, New York, Arista lived a life dedicated to family, education, and service, touching the hearts of many along the way.
Arista built a successful career in social services, working for Rockland County’s Social Services department, where she later became a department supervisor responsible for the welfare of foster children. With a fierce commitment to the well-being of these vulnerable children, she advocated tirelessly to ensure they remained with loving foster parents rather than send them back to parents who couldn’t or wouldn’t provide for them.
Her educational journey began at Taft High School in the Bronx, after which she started college at City College. Arista married, began raising her family, and later in life, returned to her studies to earn a bachelor's degree from Mercy College, following her time at Rockland Community College. This achievement was one of many that made her proud, but her principal pride lay in her children, grandchildren, and beloved nieces.
Arista’s personality was vibrant and warm. She was known for her friendly demeanor and her ability to bring laughter into any room. An unwavering source of emotional support for her family, she loved children and animals alike, often feeding birds and squirrels in her garden. Her deep appreciation for nature was matched only by her fondness for Florida sunsets, moments she cherished and shared with family and friends.
Arista leaves behind her husband, Ernest Salzstein; her son, Michael Salzstein; her daughter, Rochelle Kornfeld; and grandchildren Jacob and Zara Kornfeld. She also cherished her daughter-in-law, Ellen Kay, and step-grandchildren Jason and Stacey Simbal. Arista held her nieces Hilary, Star, and Jan in great affection and was deeply connected to them.
Throughout her life, Arista created many lasting memories. She was always there to greet her loved ones with a kiss and often patiently helped with lunch for her children during their elementary school days. She cherished sharing moments like reading Harry Potter in the car and navigating “easy hikes” in her 75th year. Every reunion with her grandchildren at the airport was met with open arms and joyous hugs, significant gestures that spoke to her nurturing spirit.
Arista was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Jacob Hoffer; her mother, Lillian Hoffer; and her beloved sister, Aestheta Wahnon. She is lovingly remembered by her family, who will carry forward her spirit of kindness, resilience, and love.
A funeral service will be held on December 20, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Sharon Gardens (Cemetery Chapel) located at 273 Lakeview Avenue, Valhalla, NY.
Shiva will be held Sunday 12/22 through Wednesday 12/25, 12:00pm - 5:00pm, at the home of Rochelle Kornfeld, 210 South Frankin Street, Nyack NY.
Arista D. Salzstein’s legacy of love and compassion will continue to resonate through the lives she touched, reminding all who knew her of the extraordinary impact one individual can have in a community and within a family.
